A fountain only works while its filter does
After two to four weeks the activated carbon stops absorbing and the cotton pre-filter clogs with fur and sediment. The water starts tasting the way tap water in a bowl tastes — which is precisely what your cat was avoiding when she started drinking from the fountain.

Will these fit my other brand of fountain?
Almost certainly not. Filters are shaped to a specific housing and aren't interchangeable between brands. These are for the Silent-Flow.
How do I remember to change them?
Set a recurring phone reminder for the first of the month. It's the single most effective thing you can do — far more reliable than noticing.
Every 2 weeks or every 4?
Two if you have multiple cats, hard water, or a long-haired cat. Four if it's one short-haired cat on soft water. When in doubt, look at it — a used filter is visibly grey.
Do they expire?
Not in any practical sense while sealed. Keep them dry and away from strong smells, since activated carbon absorbs odours from the air.
