If catnip has never worked on your cat
You've probably tried it. Bought the little pot, sprinkled some on the mat, watched her sniff it once and walk away.
She isn't broken and she isn't unusual. Response to catnip is inherited — a cat either has the gene or she doesn't, and a substantial minority don't. No amount of fresher catnip will change that.
Silvervine is the alternative. It's a climbing vine from the mountains of Japan and China, used there for cats long before catnip became popular in the West. It contains different active compounds, and most cats who ignore catnip respond to it.
Sticks, not powder
Powder gets sniffed, and the moment passes in about thirty seconds.
A stick gets held, gnawed and carried around. She strips the bark off herself, which occupies her for ten or fifteen minutes rather than one — and the chewing scrapes at her teeth while she does it.
For an indoor cat with fewer things to do, ten minutes of genuine absorption in something is worth more than another toy she ignores.

Getting the most from them
One at a time
Don't leave the pouch out. Novelty is half the effect — give one, let her have it for a while, then put it away.
Scrape to revive
When a stick seems to lose its kick, run a knife lightly along it to expose fresh bark underneath. It comes back.
Supervise the first one
Most cats chew and rub. A few try to swallow larger pieces. Watch how yours handles the first stick before leaving her to it.

What if silvervine doesn't work either?
A small number of cats respond to neither. If she ignores it entirely, send it back within 30 days.
Is it safe?
Silvervine is non-addictive and non-toxic to cats. As with anything chewable, replace a stick once it's worn down small enough to swallow.
How is it different from catnip?
Different plant, different active compounds. Many cats respond to silvervine having shown no interest in catnip at all.
Will kittens respond?
Often not. Response to both catnip and silvervine usually develops somewhere between three and six months.
How long does one stick last?
Depends entirely on the cat. A determined chewer might get through one in a week; a gentle one can make it last a month.
